A Wiki Search Engine?
The London Times writes of how the founder of Wikipedia is working with Amazon.com to create a user-edited search engine to challenge Yahoo and Google. The idea is to leverage user contributions as Wikipedia does in order to better rate the quality and relevance of search engine hits. Maintaining the integrity of such a system will be a challenge, but this could well be the next great idea.

So instead of evaluating the number of links as Google does, they'd have users evaluate the content? Seems an impossible task..
I think it would be considerably easier than getting tens of thousands of volunteers to write an encyclopedia collaboratively (as with wikipedia.) Search engine editing should be simpler... all it may take is rating a hit, or associating a search term with a site, so it could attract a lot more participation than wikipedia.
I guess the participation with wikipedia (which surprises me actually, that people dedicate themselves to it the way they do) shows that something that simple could work.
